TURKPULSE No:48 EU STYLE COOPERATION IN TURKEY’S REGION

Ankara has come to believe after half a century of ruptured relations with its northern, eastern and southern frontiers that if there is to be peace and prosperity in Turkey’s south, the Middle East and the Gulf regions, this will be materialized only through an EU style cooperation of the peoples concerned. Yet this cooperation involves much bigger self-interest calculations of the superpowers and moves at snail speed mostly due to that factor. Despite this hindrance there have been encouraging breakthroughs in this direction of late, as explained below.

TURKPULSE No:49 TERRORISM TRAGEDY IN THE US - TODAY IS THAT “TOMORROW”

Turkey has long been warning its friends and allies about tragedies of terrorism in this country. “Terrorism is a double-edged knife. Today it is hurting me, tomorrow it will be you who is suffering,” they prophesised. The writer of this article is truly too pained by the sufferings of the thousands of innocent American victims of the terrorist explosions in the World Trade Centre, New York and the Pentagon in Washington, but it is useful to recall certain facts for the success of President Bush’s fight ahead “against evil”. The President is correct in his diagnosis that this is a war between good versus evil and that it will take a long time to fight it out. He is in a position to purge the CIA from its evil sides that created Taliban, Usame Bin Laden and the PKK to make it a useful intelligence service for world peace. We Turks are with him in this fight, but it should be free of double standards.

TURKPULSE No:50 AFGHAN CRISIS – “AMERICANS FIND THE BEST WAY”

By activating NATO Charter’s Article 5 against terrorism President Bush has found the best way if US forces keep to Turkey’s principles set out in PM Ecevit’s letter. These principles may not look ideal to Washington and may go against its policy hitherto, but they constitute a good framework for the United States to hold onto in its present dilemma. For the background and details of this dilemma and Turkey’s position, as well as what to expect out of the whole turmoil, please see the article below.
