REGIMES IN TURKEY AND ELSEWHERE
A
former Indian Ambassador to Ankara, Gajendra Singh, in an article in the Indian
press, has drawn a parallel between President Kenan Evren and Pakistan’s
present military ruler, General Musharraf. Having been in this country for over
10 years and thoroughly well travelled in Turkey, Ambassador Singh is certainly
one of the best-informed foreigners about Turkey and an admirer of Ataturk. Yet
his article is a good example of how little we Turks have been able to explain
ourselves to other nations. Below is a short summary of the foreign policy of
the 12 September (1980-83) interregnum of Turkey with an invitation to the
reader’s appreciation and imagination in what regard General Musharraf’s
foreign policy resembles it.
